The religious place of Kalijai has always been cherished for the ancient sacred holy shrine located here. Also being very serene island, it is surrounded with clear crystal water of the lake of Chilika which highly attracts many tourists from around the globe. The beautiful temple located in the island is considered to be the abode of the Goddess Kalijai who is form of the powerful Hindu Goddess Kali. The local folklores and legends by the locals in the region show the rich history and culture of the region. The island is proved to be one of the best destinations for pilgrims and especially in every in January it gets highly visited. The huge fair organised here during the festival of Makar Sankranti is something a must to be visited and witnessed for sure. According to the legend a newly married girl named Jaai was going to meet her husband along with her father.

Her in-laws used to stay of this island which surrounded by Chilika lake so they took a boat to reach the island. They encountered a huge cyclone and the only people that survived it was the boatman and her father. They searched for her but couldn’t find here. After this incident people, considered her as the Goddess of people residing here and she is worshipped as excerpt of Goddess Kali. Well, the temple was built by Sri Jagannath Mansingh, king of Bankad in the year 1717. There is also another legend that says safter her death, Jai came in his father-in-law's dream and said, asked him to build a temple for her as she will stay here.
