About Chopta Tungnath

Chopta valley is located at a height of 2630 meters in the middle of beautiful oak, rhododendron, and deodar forests located in Uttarakhand. Tungnath is a Lord Shiva temple located a few kilometers away from Chopta surrounded by breathtaking mountains. Chipta Tungnath trek is easy and short, so it’s a perfect option for a short weekend getaway or four to five-day tour.

Four-day itinerary for Chopta Tungnath trek 

The trek is easy and short, best for a weekend getaway. The itinerary for the Chopta Tungnath trek begins as follows: 

Day 1: Journey will begin from Haridwar, according to your guide or travel package, you will reach Haridwar. From here, you will travel to Sari village with a journey of 7 to 8 hours. If you begin in the morning, you will most probably reach till 6 or 7 in the evening. Throughout your journey, tourists can experience the scenic beauty of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. You will reach sari village via Rishikesh, from Haridwar to Rishikesh by road, and to sari village by trek or by road according to your guide or travel route. From sari, you will trek to Deoria Tal on a 2.3 km journey, you can either stay overnight at the sari village or and begin the trek to deoria tal in the early morning. 

Day 2: From Deoria Tal, tourists will trek to Chopta through meadows and dense forests. Throughout your trek, you will see a beautiful backdrop of mountains and amazing views from the Himalayas. During your trek, tourists can witness nature closely and explore the flora and fauna of the place. The trek to Chopta is 12 km long, though it is easy, for beginners it can take an additional 1 or 2 hours due to the rocky trek. Upon your arrival, stay overnight and enjoy the views at the campsite. 

Day 3: After breakfast at the campsite, pack your lunch for the Tungnath trek. Tungnath is 3680 meters above sea level with a trek upwards of 3km. Tourists will trek through meadows and witness snow-clad mountains and breathtaking views from the Himalayas. After the trek, you will reach Tungnath temple. According to your guide, you will either travel to Chandrashilla peak which is 1 km away from Tungnath, or return back from Tungnath to Chopta. Trekking back to Chopta and staying overnight under the beautiful sky. 

Day 4: This will be your last day of the trek, enjoy your breakfast amidst nature and begin your journey to Sari village and then back to Haridwar. From Haridwar, you can take a train to Delhi or travel by road to reach your destination.  

Best time for Chopta Tungnath trek

The best time to travel for the Chopta Tungnath trek is from April to June during summers and October to December in winters. Many winter treks to Chopta are conducted in Jan. In summers, a cool breeze can be experienced early morning and late evenings while during the monsoon, the Chopta trek can be challenging, and chances of a landslide, so, usually trek during monsoons are avoided. During winters mountains are covered in snow

Essentials of Chopta Tungnath trek 

Though regular trekkers or adventure freaks might know trek essentials, for those traveling for the first time, you need to pack essential trek items like battery, torch, trek shoes, woolens if trekking in winters, few snacks such as chocolates, dry fruits, basic medicines, dry tees, and pants, sunscreens, etc. These are some essential things you need, however apart from these you can ask your trek guide to ensure you have all the necessary items.
